The Fifth Chinnor Bike Day took take place on Friday/Saturday 29th/30th.June 2001 once again at The Sports & Social Club and Sports Fields in Chinnor. The Friday night party featured Headroom, stand up comic Steve Horner and The Cosy Cat Band who went down a storm. A good start to the weekend.

Having had glorious weather in the week leading up to the event, we were all looking forward to a Run-In the next morning in beautiful sunshine. Fat chance. Around 280 of us set off from Thame Service Station at 11.00am and within two minutes we were basking in adoration of the non existant crowds on Thame High Street in pouring rain. The rain slowly cleared and by the time we got to Longwick, the sun was making a half hearted attempt to shine. Then disaster struck. I won't go into too much detail here for various reasons (some legal), but a elderly local woman ploughed into the back section of the convoy, writing off three bikes and putting local rider Keith Mills in hospital with a badly broken right leg, badly pulled ligaments in the left leg, broken finger, broken toe, various cuts (some very deep) and to cap it all, a suspected broken neck. Fortunately, this proved not to be the case and Keith is making a steady recovery. We were very fortunate indeed to have PC Andy Martin riding with us who was on the scene within 30 seconds and very quickly took control.

This obviously created a rather large cloud over those of us who knew what had happened, but when it was clear that Keith was going to be OK an announcement was made to the assembled throng at the Event Site and when it was announced that some of the profits from the day would go into a fund for Keith, many people came forward with very generous donations. I have to say that I found this more than a little touching. We'll be sorting out payment for some of the things that Keith lost or damaged in the crash - notably his glasses that bizarrely disappeared! 19.8.01: We have today given Keith a cheque for £200 from the event profits to help him out short term.

Once we'd made this announcement, things noticeably livened up. Following Headroom's acoustic set on the outside stage, Wycombe band Lithic put up a sterling performance while Wycombe MAG's judging team (which included Steve Wilson of Classic Bike Guide) tackled the job of picking the Bike Show winners; this year we had twelve trophies for the best bikes to give away. Blue of AWOL magazine was due to turn up and join the team, but due to personal reasons was unable to get there - she was most apologetic and has promised us a write up in the next issue of AWOL. Anyway, after much deliberation we picked these winners:

Best Bikes in Show:

Best American: Gary Powell modded Harley FatBoy
Best Classic (pre 1970) British:Neil Wither's 1949 Norton ES2

Best Modern British:Andy Knight's T140 engined Triton
Best European:Colin Freeman's beautiful Guzzi Falcone
Best Japanese:Keith Alexander's FJ Yamaha based chop
Best Streetfighter:
Scoot's Buell Lightning
(This bike won Best American at last year's show)
Best Modern:Keith O'Neal's Suzuki RE5
Yeah, we know this was a dubious choice, but Keith turned up late and the rarity value of this bike and the monumental effort that Keith puts in to keep it on the road in such fantastic condition meant that it had to win something... Anyway, it's our show :o)
Best Chop:Ian Perkin's evil Harley thing
Best Off Road:Graham Turner's beautifully maintained Gilera TS50
Best Trike:Maureen O'Sullivan's green V8
The Rat Trophy:John Rand's Suzuki
Best Paintwork and BEST IN SHOW:Chris Mott's wonderful chopped Harley Softail

By this time, the sun had come out and after a brief interlude by Mark King's Classic Sounds Aylesbury band One Way Out gave everyone the perfect opportunity to slack out on the grass and chill out with a beer or two. These guys played at Chinnor Bike Day 1999 and went down a storm then - until the power blew! A great band laying down R'n'B, Rock 'n'Roll and Blues, warm weather, a wonderful range of custom, classic and standard motorcycles: what a superb laid back atmosphere. Perfect.

Freddie the Fox (basically a bloke in a big fox outfit!) from Oxford radio station Fox FM turned up for an hour or so and got chased around and had his tail pulled off for his troubles. Unfortunately, the London UniMotorcycle Pilots who were booked to come and do a couple of demonstration runs couldn't make it and several 'Circus Skills' people just didn't turn up, but everyone was just so laid back, it didn't actually matter. The stalls all did well and our Barbecue which, somewhat bizarrely, was manned by four Thai Girls dressed in national costume (don't ask me why) did a roaring trade, unfortunately running out of eats mid afternoon. Around 4.30 we finally got round to drawing the raffle. We had some amazing prizes up for grabs this year. The top prize, the MuZ Scorpion supplied by was won by trike rider Mick Roxon of Watlington who bought his ticket just fifteen minutes before we drew it out! To round off a day of mixed action the Saturday night party kicked off with TestCard with their Numanesque sound which went down well, followed by our favourite covers band, Dirty Dogs who filled the hall with some fairly manic dancing. These guys have to be seen to be believed. The energy level of these guys starts off at 100% and never falters. Amazing. Finally everyone got kicked out of the Social Club by the exhausted bar staff and staggered back to their tents for further drinking and /or vomiting...

The profit from the day came to around £2600. This has been split between MAG UK (£1000), The Bucks Association for the Blind and Thame PHAB (£800 each).

Shortly after the event we had a mail from a chap from on line bike magazine Bikermag (January 2003: which unfortunately no longer exists) who had come along on the day, thoroughly enjoyed it and penned a rather complimentary review on their web site as did BikersWeb Cyberzine. Check them out. Our chums at Windsor MAG have also done something similar. A two page review also appeared in AWOL.
